Known today for being one of the world’s global leaders in denim, the Levi Strauss & Co story began in 1853 when Levis Strauss himself, an immigrant from Bavaria arrived in San Francisco. He opened a wholesale dry goods business selling clothing, blankets handkerchiefs and the like. While he was working, he recognised a need among hardworking people; clothes built to endure anything. Both innovators before their time, Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis combined copper rivet reinforcements with tough denim, leading to the first manufactured waist overalls in 1873.
From that the infamous blue jeans were born with the original 501® jeans. Although, they weren’t given an official name yet, they were just known as ‘XX’ as it meant ‘highest quality’ within the industry. Today the company is known for being one of the most iconic American brands. They were there long before both Ford and Coca-Cola, only Anheuser-Busch (founded in 1852) had been around longer than Levi’s. But with 165 years in the game, the brands staying power stands out boldly in this era of pop-up stores, fast-fashion and fleeting loyalty.
Although Levi’s started out as one of the main clothing choices for the American working class, the company’s denim became popular among rebellious youth subcultures. Worn by miners, cowboys, rebels, rock stars, presidents and everyday men and women, these functional pieces were the clothes people not only worked in—they lived their lives in, too.
